Why does this bird keep flying into the kitchen window?
There is a male cardinal who has been hanging out by, and repeatedly flying into, one of my kitchen windows for months now. He sits in the branch of a sapling near the window, making his little chip sound, then flies at the window catching himself on the sill. He does this about 20 times a day, most days, for about the past 6 months. I don’t believe he thinks it’s an open spot, as the window is not that clean, and birds would be extinct if they were that stupid.

This happens at my house all the time. The birds see the reflection of the trees and sky in the window and think there is nothing solid there and BAM! As for your particular cardinal, he could be seeing himself and thinking his reflection is a challenger. You can buy window stickers in the silhouettes of birds of prey that deter this kind of behaviour.
this reminds me of the windex commercial – maybe they can answer this one.
maybe the bird sees its reflection and keeps mistaking it for another cardinal
I don’t buy the “sees its own reflection thing” because we have one that’s doing the same thing at dirty windows, on cloudy days, whatever!
We thought at first it was because of a “hawk” statue we had, but we moved it, and besides he does it at more that one window! So I give up!
